November 20-26 is GERD Awareness Week

Poughkeepsie–In recognition of the 17th Annual GERD Awareness

Week, The Digestive Disease Center of the Hudson Valley is encouraging those experiencing

symptoms, such as chronic heartburn, acid reflux, nausea, food sticking and blood or weight-

loss to get tested.

“It’s not a coincidence that GERD Awareness Week is always held during the week of

hanksgiving,” says Dr. Tamer Sargios, Gastroenterologist with Digestive Disease Center of

the Hudson Valley. “For many who suffer from this disease, a holiday meal can ultimately

cause great pain and can also lead to more serious complications.”

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a condition where acid from the stomach flows

backward up into the esophagus. When GERD is not treated, serious complications can

occur, such as severe chest pain that can mimic a heart attack. A narrowing or obstruction of

the esophagus, bleeding or a pre-malignant change in the lining of the esophagus can also

occur.

Digestive Disease Center of the Hudson Valley typically recommends a 24-48 hour pH

monitoring test, known as Bravo, to test for GERD. It involves a miniature pH capsule that

attaches to the patient’s esophagus, measures its ph level and then transmits that information

to a receiver worn by the patient. This helps the physician with diagnosis and in planning a

course of action.

For more information about GERD or to make an appointment with a board certified

gastroenterologist, visit digestivediseaseny.com or call 845-452- 9800.

Digestive Disease Center of the Hudson Valley is the region’s only gastroenterology group

where physicians are board-certified in gastroenterology. They are dedicated to the treatment

and prevention of diseases and disorders of the digestive tract and treat people of all ages.

The Digestive Disease Center has offices in Poughkeepsie, Fishkill and Pleasant Valley,

Highland and New Windsor.
